Actually, people have been surprised that I know classical music more than the other way around. That's probably because I had a rock group in my teens (I played the keyboards and sang, in a style we decided to call progressive noise).
But I think it nearly absurd that classical musicians should listen only to classical! What about Jazz an Progressive Rock? My main influences are there: Yes, Genesis, Jethro Tull, Queen, Pink Floyd, ELP, Frank Zappa, Deep Purple (know that concerto for group and orchestra?), and so many others...
But there's more good stuff I listen to (in no particular order): Sonic Youth, Pixies, Einstürzende Neubauten (best thing nowadays), Kraftwerk, Collection d'Arnell-Andrea, Dead Kennedys, Crass, Velvet Underground, Tangerine Dream, Tom Waits. Also lots of brazilian music: Milton Nascimento, Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, Chico Buarque, Pato Fu, Arnaldo Antunes, Hermeto Pascoal, Egberto Gismonti...
And all that Jazz...
