what makes you say the atheist's view is unpopluar these days? i have found the opposite to be true. a person should feel free to use whatever means they can safely use to achieve an optimum level of performance. if one is an atheist, the optimum performance state of mind might be (as you say) achieved by taking comfort in self-confidence and in a high level of preparation. if one has faith in a divine being of some kind, that state of mind could be arrived at with those things as well, but also by taking comfort in knowing that one is never truly alone on the stage. for many, it can be extremely comforting to have faith that there is a power more mighty than one's self watching over things...not one who can play the notes for you, just simply one who is always there.
