Different strings work best for different styles of playing and personal taste preferences. Metal strings typically provide the strongest, most direct sound with quickest response. Synthetic strings provide a richer tone, and gut strings a very warm, reedy tone. Each cello is remarkably different, and many cellos work best with a combination of steel and synthetic strings (cellos often sound best with synthetic or gut core G strings, with the rest being steel). Find the combination of strings that works best for you and stick with it, that is, until you run out of money or your tastes change!
