Yo-Yo Ma played with the Utah Symphony last week, and my 10-year old daughter finally got to use the tickets we gave her for her birthday last October. My daughter is learning the cello, and LOVES Yo-Yo Ma. There was scarcely an empty seat in the hall, which was pretty amazing because there was a Jazz game being played just down the street (parking nightmare!), as well as that major Star Wars event. Yo-Yo played the Haydn Concerto in D, then the Brahms Concerto in A minor with Joseph Silverstein on violin. Our seats were on row two near the cello section, and we had a good view of Yo-Yo except when the conductor stepped forward to turn a page or something. We also had an unobstructed view of Ryan Selberg's back! We couldn't believe how expressive Yo-Yo was. He moves around so much that it's amazing he can play so beautifully. My daughter sat on the edge of her seat through the entire Haydn. I have never seen someone play with so much joy, and it was a real treat to be there.

After the concert, we went back to see if Michelle (daughter) could meet him. He was so sweet with her -- signed her program "To Michelle, Happy Birthday," asked her about her age and her cello playing, complimented her on what she was wearing, posed for a picture with her, etc. It really was a perfect evening for Michelle, and I'm sure she will remember it for a long, long time. We all enjoyed watching and listening to Yo-Yo Ma, but I will always be greatful to him for making Michelle feel like a princess.
