In a way, performance can reflect the old saying about Ph.D. students: They learn more and more about less and less. That's the way I felt for a while as music became more and more refined over the years. After all the years of study and a few years of this type of professional work, I just had to start listening to hard rock and roll. That spirit of just cutting loose really helped me to break out of the introspective world of refinement that can consume the classical musician. After a whiuleIwas cured and am back to Mozart. I think I am about to enter a Beethoven phase. These phases seem to last a few years. DG
