Anybody who takes up cello has a bright future, in my humble opinion!
If you look, there are zillions of opportunities to play with groups!
Community orchestras, like some of the others mentioned.. and a lot of times, community
colleges or adult education centers have orchestras or ensembles that
are fairly easy to get into.
One of the first things I did when taking up cello was to form a string
quartet. I tracked down some music teachers in my area, and asked them
if they had any students around my age at near the same playing level,
who would be interested in studying chamber music. I bet you could easily
find a couple of adult students or amateur musicians in your area
who would love to get together and just play.
There is also the Amateur Chamber Music Players, which is an orginization
that helps amateur musicians find other amateur musicians to get together and
play chamber music with. I'm not a member, but I've heard good things about the organization.
see http://www.acmp.net.
Good luck :)
