Good question, Laura!
The CSO cello section is a friendly group, and there is a core of 5 or 6 people that like to hang out together. I don't think the other sections are this cohesive. However, not all cello sections are like this. I agree with you that it would be tough to go through the audition process and end up in a section that had personality clashes. This is another good reason to have rotating seating. Besides being more fair, it keeps folks from getting tired of eachother. It's great to be in a section where there's a strong group feeling of support. We've gone through some tough times (the seating hassles, and a player not getting tenure), but we've always pulled through.
