My favorite is William Pleeth's "Cello". Mr. Pleeth was a very
wise man, and the section in his book about teachers and student/teacher
relationships was especially helpful to me! I read this book occasionally
when I'm struggling with technique, as he has some very good tips and
exercises. His whole approach to the cello and the world of music are just
really, really healthy.
The book also includes sections on cello with piano, and cello in chamber music.
The whole third part is on the history of cello, and I think
it was written by Nona Pyron. (??)

Except that third part (which seems thorough and is very interesting),
I think this book is really more about the playing the cello
than the instrument itself.

I'll be interested to see what others reccomend.
