On the tour it was in a truck. I have checked it airline baggage many times however, with absolutely no problems. My case is quite old - I bought it second hand, from a local cellist who used to tour internationally with it with Michael Card, and various other christian artists. It's exteremly beaten up looking, but is still structurally sound. Since I've had it, it's been to Europe twice, and all over the states many times. Incidentally I think the airlines treated it a lot better - on the tour we had local roustabouts loading and unloading the trucks, and several times the cases didn't get secured in the trucks securely, and fell over. Not to mention the temperature extremes you have to deal with with winter touring.
