I'm currently reading the book "Jaqueline Du Pre: Her life, Her Music, Her Legend," by Elizabeth Wilson, and I highly recommend it! It seems like a fairly well balanced portrayal of her and gives a great deal of insight into the factors which shaped her .
I have to admit that Du Pre has always been my idol (though it would have been interesting to see if she would have "outgrown" some of the more excessive elements of her playing style as she matured - sigh!). She was an incredible cellist and a wonderful human being, though no saint (let's not start THAT discussion again!).
