Maybe the difference is that in a string quartet the cellist is only one person away from the edge of the stage - still probably in front of the arch - therefore the sound would project more than where we are sitting in WS #1, which is half-way back in the stage where the sound is absorbed by myriad chin-instrument bodies on its fight out to the audience (OK, OK - my kids have gotten my into a Star Wars frame of mind here - the bow as light-saber????) Seriously, I do think it makes a difference in the balance and it certainly makes a difference in comfort of playing.
