Ok, I've enjoyed this whole mess, being someone who's had to endure various wrong seatings. We frequently use a seating in the nashville symphony that may or may not be wrong seating #3 - you decide. This is what's sometimes referred to as vegas seating - 1st and second violins in the normal place, violas on a riser in a row behind them, cellos in a row on a higher riser behind them, and the basses in a row on an even higher riser behind us! Woodwinds are in the middle sometimes, and the brass are over on stage left, with percussion in front of them. Oddly enough, this seating works pretty well, but we only use it for pops concerts (and Amy Grant tours) so we have lots of monitors anyway. Our stage guys love this stuff - they're all computer geeks, and get to use lots of cool cad software designing these stages, but they invariably screw up the spacing. For instance, recently they slightly misjudged how much room the first stand of cellos were going to need, and ended up having to build a small additional riser for the asst. prin. cellos left foot (I'm not kidding).
