Rock-climbing was one of my passions for about 10 years - the same as it appears to have been for Steve. No ill effects - two positives that I noted was the thickening of the skin pads which meant less tenderness after a long practice session and stronger finger grip meant crisper attack onto the string.
I agree totally with him about the climbing wall - when I was climbing we didn't have any transport so we hitch-hiked to the mountains, climbed them and hitched home - great fun. Developed superb lung capacity, stamina, pain tolerance (17 blisters from inadequately broken-in boots and 3 hours of slogging still to go!) and saw some absolutely fabulous sights which you will never see otherwise.
Usually a good bunch of people with a great sense of humour - go for the real thing.
