I don't think it's that your playing is actually going
'downhill'. I think that once performance time is within
sight, you start to think, "Hey, pretty soon I'm going
to be done with this! Yay!" At which point you start
to concentrate less, focus less, and put less passion into
playing. Subconsciously, I believe.

I've always found that I have to not really practice much
the day before, and just warm up a bit the day of the
performance. Otherwise I end up either tiring out early
or getting to 'hyped up' about it.
