Using a string quartet is not the best way to determine a good string seating arrangement in an orchestra. It's much harder to find the proper space in a section, and also in a string quartet you don't have a wind or brass instrument playing in your ear. I know that for a soloist it makes sense to be aiming out, but when we sat on the outside of the old Orchestra Hall stage, there was NEVER a complaint about not enough cello sound.
There is also a lot of repertoire where it makes no sense to split up the first and seconds, as well as the cellos and basses. For that reason I believe that there is no absolutely perfect seating, but I will always prefer to sit on the outside. Unfortunately, it may be a long time before we have the opportunity to move back.
