I used to swim competetively, and before a big meet we would spend up to 4 weeks "tapering". Taper was a process where we would gradually reduce our yardage, until by the last week we would swim about 1/10 as much as a normal practice.
HOWEVER, based on my experience the same does not apply for cello playing! I find that my best performances usually happen when I practice the MOST the week before!
