I believe 'The Outsider' is by Albert Camus.

: Your quandaries have touched so many hearts here because they are the all familiar quandaries of every artist. Some of my favorite books deal with living in the real world while carrying on one's internal dialogue of self doubt, sense of apartness, and exhilirating hope for artistic realization. If you like to read, try The Outsider, by Colin Wilson, or Steppenwolf, by Hermann Hesse, or Hunger, by Knut Hamsun. I remember being moved by these writers. Maybe you will find you are not apart, from artists.
