: I think it is good to give yourself specific goals. As long as you leave yourself a reasonable amount of time. If you know you can prepare a major work or at least one movement from a major work in a month then why not give yourself a deadline?

What happens if you don't make the deadline? Do you cancel out on the concert or just play a mediocre or less than mediocre concert? You don't want to give the audience a bad taste of your playing! If you play a really solid concert the first time aren't you more likely to be invited to play again?
