Theo - Keeping the bow at the same distance from the bridge during a full stroke can be done with the bow at an acute angle to the string - the scratching sound you produce is quite something.
The important aspect is to keep the bow parallel to the bridge. In keeping it at a constant distance from the bridge one must realise that the actual distance from the bridge which gives the best tone varies with each note. As a rough guide the open string - nearer the fingerboard, the higher the left hand - the closer the bow can move to the bridge.
Sounds simple? When you have just become happy with the sound of your playing you change string make and a whole new set of positions appear.
Experiment and good luck - edi
