Starker's reputation for "coldness" is undeserved, and especially so in recent years. He carries himself with great dignity, is very conscious of being "in the spotlight" wherever he goes, and understands that he sets an example, musically and personally, to people he'll never even meet. He is very demanding of his students, and does not "pal around" with them. But he cares very, very deeply about each one of them, and shows it in dozens of ways, during and after their time with him. I know both him and Yo-Yo well, and they indeed have different styles of interacting, particularly with strangers. They are simply themselves, for all to see. But only someone who doesn't know Starker could call him "cold."
