This old cello has just been restored (including fitting a new bass-bar) by Leon Petroff (http://www.leonpetroff.com.au) a well respected luthier here in Melbourne. The cello most probably dates from the second half of the 18th century, making it approximately 250 years old. It has numerous cracks on the front table, as is typical with many instruments that are this age, but these are well and truly closed and ought to remain that way for the foreseeable future. (I.e., longer than we're going to be around to worry about it.) The instrument is possibly by the maker G.Leibich (sp?), though this is highly speculative in my opinion. It has a deep and masterly applied red varnish. The colour is most accurately reproduced in this photo: http://simon.i2pi.com/images/images<2005/cellocolour.jpg As you can see, it's somewhat darker than the main photo here would have you think. This is all, of course, relative to my monitor and its particular settings! The instruments' tone is quite bright, and projects exceptionally well. This cello is quite lovely to play. Photos are at http://simon.i2pi.com/images/images<2005/cello.jpg The true colour is closest to this image: http://simon.i2pi.com/images/cellocolour.jpg For a photo of the cellos restoration please see http://simon.i2pi.com/images/images<2005/cello_repair/table.jpg I know that seeing all of those blocks can be somewhat harrowing, but this is quite normal for a cello of its age, and if done skillfully (as it certainly is here!) will not adversely affect the cellos tone, but merely serve to ensure the cracks do not reopen.
